On September 5, 2007 we sent the application in for Mikiyas to become a Canadian Citizenship.
On November 9, 2007 we were sent a letter advising us that the application was received, and it would take 12 to 15 months to be completed.
On December 14, 2007 Mikiyas became a Canadian Citizen!
On December 24, 2007 Mikiyas' Citizenship arrived.
Merry Christmas from the Canadian Government to our home. God has continually blessed us with all things speedy on Mikiyas' adoption. I pray he continues to bless us this way as we wait to bring our daughter home.
Which takes me to another topic ... Bill C-14. I seriously must not be understanding the amendment a whole lot because other than granting Citizenship automatically and not having to wait for that process of granting permanent residency and citizenship [Mikiyas received his citizenship 6 months after arrival into Canada], I don't see anyway it speeds the adoption process.
Yes we had to apply to sponsor Mikiyas to come to Canada as a landed immigrant. That took time. But we did that before his referral even came, so there was no delay whatsoever. We were granted approval to sponsor Mikiyas long before we even knew his name. After receiving his referral, we sent the updated information to the Canadian government. In our wait to travel we had to wait for a medical to be completed and approved by Canadian Immigration. Depending on when the court date is to grant custody, this can be the possible delay. But in Mikiyas' adoption, we were not affected by the wait as his medical came before the court date.
Unless Bill C-14 means that no medical is required, I don't see how this speeds things up at all. However, can it really be done that a medical check is no longer required? I've heard that it be the case, but I'm skeptical that the Canadian Government would not require any medical check whatsoever. I see nothing in the way of speeding up the adoption process unless the medical is no longer necessary. Perhaps someone can shed some light........
Regardless of whether the medical is required or not, Bill C-14 would not have sped up the process with Mikiyas. Maybe we will be thankful for it in our daughter's adoption. Only God knows at this time.
What Bill C-14 does do though, besides granting the citizenship, is save us money in applying for both landed immigrant status and citizenship, and it allows us to travel outside Canada with less hassles. [Until the care card comes, it does nothing for us by way of medical care in Canada, which is where my big complaint lies.]

No medical will be required. They have said they will make it a priority to speed things up. It sounds like since they know it is 4-6 month presently, and they have stated in the Canada Gazette the concerns of the Ethiopian parents, that they are going to try to make it shorter than that.

YEAH!! Congratulations on Mikiyas becoming a Canadian citizen...the last paperwork (other than passport!)
Ayana and Moses became citizens a couple of months ago...maybe we should have a Citizenship party:)

We applied for Samara's citizenship in Sept as well and it hasn't started being processed yet. We're praying for a quick turnaround time, too.

As far as I know they won't require a medical anymore, BUT how long will the citizenship process actually take is the question? Time will tell, and hopefully it will be a good thing, and bring children together with their parents faster :)
