TV - the good and the bad

TV can be such a resource of information and entertainment. It can also be a taste of poison. You can allow the poison to plant deep roots of hurt or you can turn your ear and pretend you didn't hear it. What some people may find disgusting, others may find humorous. Here are some examples:

Baby Mama - not sure of the exact wording on this one: "Please don't adopt a black baby" or "Don't adopt from Africa" and went on being tired of all the celebrities adopting from Africa and it's all just a fad.

America's Favorite Mom - in showing categories of moms [i.e. the CEO, the single mom etc.] adoptive moms were placed in the category of "Non-moms". We were even given a heart around the title! [Thanks L. for letting me know about this one!]

Juno - the pregnant teen protagonist tells a couple who long to adopt: "You shoulda gone to China. You know, 'cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods"

Then She Found Me - a woman struggling to have a child is told: "Adopt from China! They're putting them in trash cans there!"

What most people don't realize is China is making it more and more difficult for international adoptions to be processed. It's not as easy it used to be. Macleans magazine wrote a lengthy article titled "Bursting the Chinese Baby Bubble" on this topic specifically in there May 19'08 issue.

On the other hand, TV is resourceful. Meet the Robinsons made solely for the purpose of entertainment [and money of course]. My son loves it. He laughs a lot during this movie. It was a nice change for us from his usual CARS movie. When we first got Meet the Robinsons, he wanted to watch it everyday, so we let him for three days. [Do understand he watches movies about once every 2 weeks and about 1.2 hour of tv a week. We don't deprive, but he prefers to play!] Some people may find the adoption message isn't right for their family, but for my family it works. Even at his young age, Mikiyas seemed to respond to the message of being an adoptive family is forever.

Here is a taste of what is being aired on PBS. Tonight, I encourage you all to watch something that will open your eyes and break your heart ... Walk to Beautiful. This is a collection of stories of rural Ethiopian women who are treated as pariahs in their communities because they have obstetric fistula [a childbirth complication that causes chronic incontinence]. If looking on your local tv guide, it may be listed as "Nova" on channels KCTS or WTVS.

I do agree. I have been hearing negative adoption comments more and more often on tv.

"Meet the Robinsons" is a favorite of our kids and we like "Martian Child" although Mikayas is young for it, you guys might enjoy it.

"A Walk to Beautiful" was great. I had seen it before and the first time was a real eye-opener.
