HEALTH:
Today we received some updated news on how Mihret is doing. She has gained weight, shrunk in length [obviously a measurement error somewhere], and chest and head have grown as well. Her respiratory infection / pneumonia is completely clear. They are going to still do the iron test for us to see if numbers have increased.
In addition, her development is moving along. She's smiling at caregivers, starting on more solid food, rolling around and sitting up with support. Mihret is doing wonderfully.
That about sums it up.
NAME:
We have decided to pronounce Mihret's name as what CAFAC has been calling her in Ethiopia. She will be most used to that when we embrace her, and it is easier for all you Westerners that can't roll your tongue. It will also be easier for kids to pronounce. So here it is:
Mih as in mirror. Not Me as in melt. Not Mi as in Mike.
Ret as in retribution. Not Ret as in return.
Hopefully that helps. Mikiyas will continue to pronounce it the "Mi-he-ret" way, with a beautiful roll of the tongue that comes so naturally to him. He wasn't impressed that we decided to do it the way we are until I pointed out that everyone calls him Miki, which is a shortened, easier way of saying Mikiyas. And we did not change any spelling or take away how it is pronounced in Ethiopia. We just did it the easier of the two ways. Mikiyas is slowly accepting this.

What a blessing to hear a better report on her health. That must take some of the worry away instantly. So glad to hear that she is doing well.
Her name is beautiful and I'm glad that you explain so well how to pronounce it because I too am used to it in the more traditional Ethiopian pronunciation.
Glad to hear Mihret is doing better, you must be so relieved. It is so hard when your kids are sick, let alone sick and half way around the world.

Lovely. I would love to be able to pronounce it the Ethiopian way, but I would need some practice. Maybe Miki can help with that? In the meantime, the current pronunciation is still gorgeous.
